The mission of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, the operational arm of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, is enshrined in the Michigan Constitution: to investigate alleged discrimination and to secure the equal protection of civil rights. The Department fulfills its mission by investigating and resolving complaints of discrimination and promoting voluntary compliance with civil rights laws.

If a Michigan resident believes they were discriminated against while applying for a job or an apartment, for example, they can call the MDCR. During the intake process, MDCR officers need to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) may discriminate and which questions to ask to identify AI as a potential factor in the case. STPP collaborated with the MDCR on an informational piece with example cases and potential questions to guide the officers.
