STPP is moving forward with planning for the new Michigan Science, Technology, and Public Policy Fellowship (MiST). MiST Fellows will bring science and technology expertise to state government that will deliver evidence-based policy outcomes for Michigan.
The fellowship will be modeled after similar nonpartisan programs at the state and federal levels. The American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) has a Science & Technology Policy fellowship program, where early and mid-career PhDs contribute their expertise to complex policy matters in the federal government. Starting with California in 2008, states including New Jersey, Missouri, Idaho, and West Virginia have created fellowship programs that reflect the strengths and opportunities unique to their environment.
What is the MiST Fellowship?
- A two-year fellowship for post-graduate scientists, engineers, and technologists working in the nonpartisan Legislative Services Bureau (LSB) in Lansing and state agencies to be determined.
- Fellows will research requests from legislators about science and technology topics to produce policy briefs and reports that support decision makers.
- The University of Michigan will administer the fellowship program, working in collaboration with the LSB, Michigan State University, and other partners around the state
- Additional programming will provide training on rules and procedures, best practices in policy research, and networking opportunities for career advancement.
