Postdoctoral scholar Ben Green recently joined Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society for a webinar focused on what fairness means in the context of algorithms and how fairness can be measured.
Joined by other scholars studying algorithms, Green discussed what motivates his research.
“We define a metric and try to optimize an algorithm to satisfy that metric which means it’s certifiable,” Green said. “What I’m really interested in my work is how we move beyond that purely formal and formalization-based approach to thinking about the broader social and political context to ensure that we’re not just taking fairness as a convenient mathematical definition, but as sort of the bigger picture.”
