On Thursday, October 21st, STPP faculty affiliate Dr. Todd Allen, Director, Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project and Glenn F. and Gladys H. Knoll Department Chair of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences testified before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology Subcommittee on Energy and Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight. The hearing, entitled “Judicious Spending to Enable Success at the Office of Nuclear Energy,” focused on the priorities of the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy.
In his testimony, Dr. Allen noted that it is currently an exciting and ambitious time for nuclear energy in the United States. Congress has recognized the importance of nuclear energy for providing clean reliable energy and supporting good jobs. Dr. Allen recommended that going forward, the Department of Energy establish a framework of principles and policies that drive technologies from new ideas to deployment. He emphasized the need for the Office of Nuclear Energy to balance a national research infrastructure program, early innovation, concept development, demonstrations, and ultimately commercial deployment.
