Detroit Public TV's One Detroit program looked at the racial disparities inherent in law enforcement's use of facial recognition technology, making reference to a study published in August 2020 by the Ford School's Shobita Parthasarathy.
"We have entered a world of policing that is the stuff of science fiction," she says. "It really is being used around the world, but without much regulation."
"For better or worse, Detroit is a leader when it comes to the use of facial recognition technology," she notes, warning, "There are biases that make it less accurate essentially among anyone who is not a white man."
