
STPP Managing Director Molly Kleinman was recently quoted in the Detroit News and by the Michigan Capital News Service regarding the use of police drones and privacy concerns.
From the Detroit News article:
"More police departments are using drones, and there just aren't the guardrails in place to prevent civil rights violations and address privacy and surveillance rules," Kleinman said.
In June, UM's Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program released a policy paper, "Regulating Drone Surveillance in Michigan," suggesting the state adopt a law similar to Alaska's statute that restricts police use of drones.
"Michigan currently lacks comprehensive laws and regulations specifically addressing the use of drones in law enforcement, leaving a gap between technology adoption and policy implementation," the policy statement said. "Because Michigan is relatively new to the adoption of police drones, there have been few legal cases within the state specifically addressing the use of drones by law enforcement.
