With recent revelations that OpenAI's agents hacked an Australian government health data website and attempted to break into three other targets, and other recent instances of unanticipated acts by AI agents, University of Michigan experts provide insights about AI regulation.
Shobita Parthasarathy, professor of public policy and director of the Science, Technology and Public Policy Program, comments, "The United States urgently needs to regulate AI, because of the risks the technology poses today, to privacy, civil liberties, equality, our health, environment and beyond. If the federal government will not act, then state and local governments must step in more forcefully to protect its citizens. Most importantly, governments must consider the concerns and expertise of their citizens, and not just rely on the recommendations of tech leaders."
